Publication Release, October 2024




The publication "Art Archives Study. Before and after 2004. Interviews" contains a series of insightful interviews with a range of individuals, offering different perspectives on the collaborations and connections among artists, curators, institutions, non-governmental organizations, archives, and art markets in evolving contexts.

As part of the Art Archives Study project, interviews were conducted with:

  • Zdenka Badovinac on the Arteast 2000+ Collection at Moderna galerija, Ljubljana.
  • Vít Havránek reflecting on Tranzit and the period around 2004.
  • Jana Intihar Ferjan discussing the Archives Department of Moderna galerija, Ljubljana.
  • Hans Knoll on mobility between Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, and Russia, viewed through the lens of a gallery owner.
  • Boris Ondreička on his artistic and curatorial practice.
  • Marisa Ravalli on the Center for Contemporary Art Futura.
  • Maruša Sagadin on her artistic practice and connections between Slovenia and Austria.
  • Igor Španjol on the Essl Art Award CEE.
  • Jiří Švestka sharing insights into his curatorial and gallery practices before and after 2004.

The interviews are also supplemented by a map showcasing selected curators, artists, art critics, institutions, foundations, venues, collections, exhibitions, and projects referenced throughout the brochure.

    Research Meeting at Moderna galerija, Ljubljana , 12-13 March 2024      Over the past year the project partners, Archive of Fine Arts in Prague, basis wien — Archiv und Dokumentationszentrum, and the Archive of Moderna galerija Ljubljana, have dedicated significant time to research. They have employed various methods to investigate the impact of the year 2004 on the art sector and how these effects can be identified, measured, and represented.      Alongside classical research methods and interviewing contemporary witnesses, they addressed queries directly to their own databases for finding and interpreting source material from the holdings of their archives,.      Each of these archives use relational databases not only for describing and indexing the objects within their collections but also for enriching them with supplementary data and linking them to persons, institutions, and events, such as exhibitions.    ...

The conference I REMEMBER THIS held on 8 October 2024, which was jointly organised by three archives on contemporary art that are part of the project Art Archives Study. Before and After 2004 was a one-day conference in Vienna with international guests that also met with great interest from students, artists, international archive partners and others.  In their joint two-year project co-financed by the EU, Moderna galerija Archives in Ljubljana, the Archive of Fine Arts in Prague and basis wien—Archive and Documentation Centre endeavoured to use their respective holdings to create a retrospective view of the change in the political landscape since the EU expansion by 10 countries in 2004.
